![]() Fast action on some tough bulls at the PBR Memphis Invitational. PBR Memphis Invitational At the FedEx Forum By Tommy Brannon The PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Memphis Invitational Built Ford Tough Series was held in Memphis, TN August 20 and 21. Fast and furious is one way to describe the action, with the top riders and top bulls in the series coming to the FedEx Forum. The home state's favorite Rookie of the Year, Cody Nance of Paris, Tennessee did not disappoint the crowd in Friday night's Round 1. Fresh from a win in San Antonio, Texas, Nance won Round 1 riding "Bad Medicine" (owned by Teague Bucking Bulls) the full eight seconds with a score of 88.25 points. Nance's reaction to the win was customarily reverent. He said that he felt very blessed to be close to home with friends and family there at the event. Unfortunately, Nance went scoreless in Round 2 on Saturday night. The overall winner of the PBR Memphis Invitational was Silvano Alves of Pilar do Sul, Brazil. At the end of Round 1, Alves had a score of 87 points riding "Segs The Juice" (owned by Jeff Robinson Bucking Bulls), and was tied for fifth place with Austin Meier of Kinta, Oklahoma, who rode "Blue Cheese" (owned by Kooper Branum & Gene Baker). Alves then scored 85.25 points in Round 2 on "Chance" (owned by Teague Bucking Bulls). He finished third in the Championship Round, and went home with total winnings of $27,710 for his efforts. Not bad pay for a total of 16 seconds of bull riding! The Memphis Invitational is one of 30 bull riding events in the Built Ford Tough Series, held across North America by PBR, where bulls and cowboys accumulate points to qualify for the Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada October 20-24, 2010. Started in 1994, the event honors Spicer Gripp, who was a Hereford resident, loved and admired by many. Friends of Spicer Gripp started the memorial roping to continue helping kids, as Spicer did, and to support the Spicer Gripp Memorial Youth Foundation Scholarships at West Texas A & M University. ![]() 2009 NRHA Derby - RC Fancy Step Shawn Flarida Leads Team USA Going to 2010 WEG Consistent performance and two strong showings put Shawn Flarida and RC Fancy Step, owned by Buffalo Ranch, a step ahead of the rest at the 2010 Adequan/USEF Open Reining Championships, in Oklahoma City, OK. The Championships served as the USEF Selection Trial for the Adequan US Reining Team for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Flarida leads Team USA into the WEG, which will take place in late September in Lexington, Kentucky. In the first go round, Shawn and RC marked a 223.5, which was two and a half points higher than the nearest competitor. In the second go round and finals, Flarida piloted the flashy palomino stallion to another 223, which combined for a composite score of 446.5. Placings were based on a two-go-round composite score with the top four horse-and-rider combinations earning spots on the official US Reining Team. Flarida rode confidently and his slides and flying changes were rock solid. Flarida improved on his runner-up finish in the 2009 Adequan/USEF National Open Reining Championships by scoring individual honors, securing him a spot on the Adequan US Reining Team. "He's consistent," said Flarida about RC Fancy Step being on the team. "Experience is our strength; everyone has been here before. He was really good as three year old, but he has gotten better every year. I couldn't have asked him to show any better, especially just coming off the Derby two weeks before." Prior to this victory, Flarida rode RC Fancy Step to the 2007 Congress Open Futurity championship, as well as the 2009 NRHA Open Derby title. RC Fancy Step now has lifetime earnings in excess of $336,000. Joining Flarida on Team USA will be Tom McCutcheon, Aubrey, Texas; Craig Schmersal, Overbrook, Oklahoma; and Tim McQuay, Tioga, Texas. Based only two and a half hours from the Kentucky Horse Park, Flarida is looking forward to riding in his own backyard. Flarida is the NRHA's All-Time Leading Money-earning rider, and first NRHA Three Million Dollar Rider. He is only the second rider to earn two million dollars in NRHA competition, and has five NRHA Open Futurity and five NRHA Derby wins and to his credit. ![]() "Dillan," Jonathan Timberlake, Laura Sumrall, and "Smarty."
